Denmark Music Trip Diary: Day 3

With the College band currently touring Denmark Hope Valley College Y11 leaver Tom Benson keeps you up to date and in the loop with everything HVC in and around Copenhagen.

"Well it's our first full day in Denmark and also our first concert. After waking up and having breakfast, we set off for Copenhagen over the beautiful Danish countryside in the sunshine. In the morning we had some time to ourselves + in groups, to walk around the pedestrian area. We then had lunch by a very nice fountain. After that we walked to a tower with an observatory on the top. The 'Runde Taarn' was constructed by King Christian 4th for him to rise above the lights from the city and view the stars. It is 34.8 metres high and has a spiraling coach road on the inside for the King to climb as he was too lazy!! We then moved on to the canal side to see all the beautiful boats and the jazz festival that is happening at the moment. It was then time for the concert and we found our spot and set up the equipment. We attracted a bit of a crowd before we even started! Wind Band then started playing and the crowd got much bigger. Because there was a road behind us we were surrounded! After skillfuly packing the trailer we took one final peek at the jazz festival, there was a great band playing dixieland jazz and some of us were dancing. We then made our way on to the metro system very slickly and smoothly to get to the train station, and finally home, walking through the town back to the school."

Denmark Music Trip Diary: Day 1+2

"Well, We're finally here after 30 hours of travelling across only one time zone. It's a lovely sunny evening in flat flat Denmark.
After leaving school at 12:00pm ( but a little late in true Hope Valley College Fashion) we made our way to Chesterfield and then down the M1 and across Norfolk to Harwich, after a couple of stops along the way. This is where we swapped transport. At 5:00pm exactly we pulled up in front of a massive cruise liner and were disheartened to find out it wasn't ours. But after passport checks and baggage searches we boarded for the 18 hour ferry ride - some were looking forward to it and some were dreading it. As we settled into our 6-berth cabins we realised that we had the most pointless window in history. The food was rather nice, a buffet with various assortments of muscles and other sea foods along with Chicken Korma and other dishes. The evening was then passed away playing card games, finding the films, playing, taking part in a pub style quiz (with questions from Britain and Scandinavia) and a quiz master with a large moustache. The weather was very clear and the sea was very calm. After a fairly uneventful night we were awoken at around 7:45am for a European breakfast of cheese and meat along with familliar cereals at 8:00am. We then killed some time by watching the GPS map of the boat and played various games in the lounge before disembarking and meeting up with our Danish coach for another 5 hour coach trip to the school. On the way we watched a film 'Meet the Parents', the prelude to 'Meet the Fockers' with Danish subtitles and watching the coach cross from island to island over very large bridges. We have now finally arrived at the school and are having snacks of bread and cheese before a evening meal of pizza. This is Tom Benson saying today 'It's warm but not bad' and Hope Valley signing off on Sunday."

Mr. R Davies R.I.P - A Message From the Principal
Principal Bernie Hunter: "On a sad note I am sorry to report to you the death of Bob Davies. Bob worked at the College for 30 years as Head of Science. This is only part of the story as he contributed to College life in many other ways including helping to establish rural science and running an annual trip to the Norfolk Broads. Bob was also well known in the Buxton area, where he lived, through his involvement with the Burbage band and Rotary movement. Bob was unsurprisingly a leading light in the planning of the 50th Anniversary before his illness forced him to relinquish his role. He would have really enjoyed seeing the project through."
