| College Looking Green with Energy Meters |
|
By Matt Scorer Hope Valley College has installed energy meters in the Peveril block to help students with their science studies. The meters provide live feedback on energy consumption from computers, sockets, lights and any other energy consumers within the block. Amazingly the meters also communicate with power consumers sending signals against the electric currentIt is hoped that they will help the College find ways to become more energy efficient and will be used to demonstrate to students how they can conserve energy. Eco Committee member Ed Ayers (Y11) said: "The devices are at the forefront of technology and are a really amazing piece of kit. They will help the environmental demonstrate to students just how much energy appliances use and help to make them conscious of both the true financial and environmental costs." The devices will also be used in the "Carbon Campaign" which has been set up in the College to encourage students to be conserve energy in College. A proportion of any money that is saved on energy bills will then be returned directly to the students. This will be done by investing the money in a new rewards scheme which will see the introduction of prizes for students who earn house points. Principal Bernie Hunter said: "The energy meters have provided us with multiple opportunities. Not only will they help to make us more energy efficient they will also help to introduce and fund a better rewards system. It is important that we are conscious of the impact we have on the environment, In addition it enables us to make progress on finding new and improved ways of rewarding students who demonstrated excellent behaviour and progress." |
